The 21 year old Chivas Regal Royal Salute is a very special blend! It was created by the Chivas Brothers in honor of Queen Elizabeth II and launched on June 2, 1953, the day of her coronation. This historical event is also reflected in the name of the blend: “Royal Salute” stands for the 21 gun salutes fired on the coronation day. The whiskeys blended into Chivas Regal Royal Salute 21 YO are all at least 21 years old. This long period of maturation allowed the individual whiskey varieties to develop a particularly rich, complex aroma, which is reflected in the high quality of the Chivas Regal Royal Salute.
Colour: straw yellow, tinted much darker than most blends (with dye)
Tasting Notes
- Nose: gentle nuances of pear and melon, sherry sweetness, spices and vanilla
- Palate: fruity notes and sherry sweetness, with touches of ginger, cinnamon and biscuit
- Finish: unspeakably long, with a fine interplay of spices and malt
Our recommendation: The Chivas Regal Royal Salute blend develops best at room temperature and can then be enjoyed straight from a tumbler.
Chivas Regal Royal Salute21 YO – The brothers John and James
From 1801, brothers John and James Chivas ran a whiskey and food trading company in the Aberdeen region of Scotland. They stored whiskey casks in the company’s basement, which were then used for the first blends. If a customer wanted a strong whiskey and they didn’t have a suitable product in stock, the brothers on the floor below would mix different cask agings together. They quickly became known for their Scotch Whiskey blends. In 1909, master blenders Charles Howard and Alexander Smith created a 25-year-old blend that became the world’s first luxury whiskey sold, in homage to the Chivas brothers. Success increased after Chivas Regal conquered the New York scene and acquired the Strathisla distillery in 1950 to expand production.
